May not be a stereo cable. If the plug that goes into your sound card is made up of three segments, separated by small, plastic insulators... it is indeed a stereo plug. Cable may be defective. If left and right computer speakers work when plugged into your sound card, definitely blame the cable.

If the plug only has two segments... it's a mono plug... get the proper stereo 1/8" plug to two RCA plug cable...

Did the cable come with the sound card. The output of the sound card requires a stereo plug. If it is not, you will only get one side audio. Also, if your source is only one side audio that is what you will get. If you play a mono source, and the sound comes out on both sides, then you know the cable is good.

Sounds like you are using a cable that is not made for your home theater. Are these speakers for a home stereo or computer?
Home theater speakers need a separate wire for each speaker, one for the left speaker and one for the right speaker.

Find the wire that works and plug it into the other speaker -- if it works then it's the cable.
Work your way backwards eliminating each element by simply swapping back and forth.

could be broke wire, could be not a stero file or sound card. could be plugged into the wrong hole on your sound card.

Check your cables.

Make sure they are all firmly pushed in.
