Armagnac is a grape brandy from the Gascony region of Southwestern France. It's closest relative is Cognac, another grape brandy from an appellation located about 100 miles north of Armagnac, in the Charente region of Southwestern France, about 100 miles northeast of Bordeaux.
Even though Armagnac is related to and often confused with Cognac. Armagnac and Cognag are very different with regards to their grapes, terroir, distillation, élevage, blending, aromas, tastes and textures:
# Armagnac is the oldest type of Brandy in France, with documented references to distillation dating back to the early 15th century (1461). Cognac is the best known type of Brandy in the world, a benchmark by which most other Brandies are judged.
# The primary grapes used in making Cognac and Armagnac are Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche, and Colombard, but only Armagnac is allowed to use a hybrid grape, the baco.
# Armagnac is distilled only once in continuous stills (the unique alambic Armagnacais) at low temperatures so many of the congeners, fruit and esters remain as flavors in the spirit given it his unique rustic character. Cognac is distilled twice in copper pot stills resulting in a more refined spirit.
# Armagnac is aged in black oak casks made from the local Monzelun oak ; Cognac is aged in white oak casks made from the Limousin and Tronçais oak.
# Armagnac is a distillation of a specific year and can thus be dated, Cognac is a blend of several years distillation and falls within specific rules as to what it can be called.
Which is better- Cognac or Armagnac? This is an unanswerable question, for the matter is long debated and boils down to individual taste preference.

Armagnac:
Wine-distillation, alcohol percentage 40-43%, taste: plum and hazelnut, delicious at a cup coffee.
Cognac:
Distillation from wines made around the French city Cognac. If not, the drink is called "Eau de vie". Never keep in the fridge, best served on body temperature (therefore the rolling round in the glass). Mature for at least 3 years.

The answer is simple. All cognac and Armagnac is BRANDY. Not all brandy is cognac....... Cognac is produced only in the town of Cognac in France. Armagnac is also produced in France, it is a lighter form of brandy. Brandy is produced all over the world. We produce it here in Spain. It is as good as Cognac but as it was not produced in Cognac France it is only brandly. As Shakespear asked 'What's in a name?' Just sup up and enjoy.

has nothing to do with eau de vie. both armagnac and cognac are brandys. which means: wine is distilled into a liquor and then aged in oak barrels. armagnac is brandy made in the armagnac region of france, cognac is brandy made in the cognac region of france.
