Can anyone tell me what the Virgin Mary looks like? Seems to me that the Bible never mentioned what her physical features were or how she looked. Why is it people claim they've seen her when they don't know what she looks like? Who are these people really seeing?

The Blessed Virgin Mary's physical attributes should not be our concern. Our respect for her should be founded on the fact that she was chosen by God to be the human mother of Jesus. The statues, pictures of her have always been depicted by the artists as a very beautiful woman with a saintly face. In the image of the Mother of Perpetual Help, the artist's rendition is that of a slim-faced woman, with the Baby Jesus in her arms. The Pieta by Michaelangelo depicts her as mother grieving. In the Philippines, there is a statue of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, and pilgrims walk miles to visit her, and ask for her blessings before they embark on a trip. A very recent artwork in the Philippines is of The Blessed Virgin in brass, a towering figure atop a small church, as it is believd that it was with the Virgin Mary's help that we were able to topple Marcos. That Virgin we loving call Our Lady of Peace.

The Bible doesn't describe the Blessed Virgin's physical appearance. But as a Catholic, I can say that Marian apparitions are accepted by many Catholics. Perhaps she looks different to people of different cultures. I've never seen her myself, but I enjoy some of the art depicting her various appearances at Lourdes, Fatima and many other locations. I think you're probably looking at it like a skeptic. If someone wants to believe that they've seen the BVM, let them believe it. There's no harm in it, and it reinforces many people's faith.

She looks different to each person to whom she appears. For example, when she appeared in Mexico as to Juan Diego (this is known as Our Lady of Guadelupe) she had dark hair, dark skin, and dark eyes. In other instances she has looked like the people of the place where she is appearing. Basically, because she is coming from heaven, she can look however she wants to look. Of course, not all apparitions are real-- sometimes insane people see Jesus and Mary.
