I am looking to buy a Plasma TV to hang over my fireplace. I hardly ever use the fireplace so that shouldn't be an issue. I'm looking at either Pioneer or Panasonic. I noticed the Pioneer PDP models are getting rave review but I don't know a whole lot.

What things should I look for when purchasing one? I am in the market for a 42" with HDTV capabilities. I would like the TV to include speakers and a tuner but not required.

What advice can you give?

My advice for you is to do your own research on several t.v's before you buy them. You may get suggestions from people here but its always good to do your own research especially making a purchase this big. Look on line at some brands, most sights have viewer ratings and feedback on big items, go to your local stores that sell plasma's and don't be afraid just to browse and ask questions and beware of the sales person's pitch, remember he is just gaining commission. Take the time to make up your mind and make the right one!
Good luck and Happy Channel Surfing.

First I would like to reply on the advices the previous people have posted.

What [~Lips of Mo... says is not really "safe". From I have learnt from a saleman who working in a grand tv store, they usually calibrate those Tvs set with high comission better, and purposely make those with lower comission looks poorer. I guess the only "safest" way to check out which has a picture quality is to buy a decent HDTV magazine and start reading it. =)

What ottmar_morett says isn't true either. Since last year June, ALL Plasma and LCD TVs' life-span have been more than 60,000 hours, which is about 16 years if one watches his/her Tv for 10 hours a day! That's why now EVERY brands remove this from the specification of EVERY Plasma/LCD Tvs as 15+years are way too long to be reached.

What jesse j says is right. Sony's Bravia really rules in the LCD league just like Panasonic LCDs. However, Panasonic and Pioneer Plasma tv aren't anyway inferior to them. And even now with more improved technology, LCD still tends to produce motion artefacts. Plasma TVs is much better on this aspect.

Since u asked only for plasma, I suppose that u know the cons n pros between LCDs n plasmas. Thus, I will only be talking on plasma here. I'm thinking whether u have been reading "What Video" as u actually know that Panasonic and Pioneer produces Best plasma tvs. Since last year, Panasonic and Pioneer have been ranking top in the plasma league, their plasma tv are simply too good compared to other brands. Panasonic plasma ALWAYS have unbeatable black leves[grey scaling], and its motion handling is fantastic as well. u can so hardly spot any motion artefacts from Panasonic plasma. Pioneer may not be as good as when comparing to handling motion artefacts and black levels, but still its picture sharpness is excellent. It's really hard to decide which is actually better as they are good at different aspect.

I would say Plasma is a very good choice, and if it's either Panasonic or Pioneer's plasma it would be much better. =) Have a Panasonic PX600 series with a built-in MP4 recorder if u wish to save money on a dvd-recorder. Buy a copy of either "What Plasma" or "What Video" if u wish to know more. Good luck!
Oh, and here's the link to some HDTV reviews, u have to pay for it if u wish to see more. http://www.homecinemachoice.com/whatvideo/

don't buy a plasma screen at all. While for a while it is a nice toy there are a lot of problems with it. First of all the average lifetime is only about 10.000 hours. After that you can expect the screen having lost that many pixels that the picture is more or less unwatchable. Static images will burn into the screen very easily and will cause nasty shadows when watching other pictures. Invest a few dollars/pounds/euros more and buy a LCD system, most of the new ones are hdtv ready

sakhi93 is right, Sony Bravia rocks hard! Screw plasma screens with all the glare. Get Sony Bravia LCD with almost no glare on the screen.
