The original name was Digital Video Disc during the period when the specs were originally being defined. When it was discovered that the discs could be used for other purposes, they changed the name to Digital Versatile Disc.

The claim is that they never officially released the name Digital Video Disc and that it's always be "versatile".

Used to be Digital Versatile Disc, Digital Video Disc, now stands for none of those, it's like how NT in Windows NT was "New Technology" but now MS dropped that meaning.
