You can light a candle near where you are cutting them.

Tips for Preparing Onions:
While many people love to eat onions, most dread cutting them since this process usually brings a tear or two to the eyes. The compound that causes the eyes to burn is a phytochemical known as allyl sulfate that is produced when sulfur-compounds released by the onion's ruptured cells are exposed to air.
If cutting onions irritates your eyes, there are a few tricks that you can employ. Chill the onions for an hour or so before cutting. This will slow the activity of the enxyme that produces the allyl sulfate and is a better choice than the traditional method of cutting onion under running water. This latter process may dilute the amount of allyl sulfate, which, while it may be irritating to the eyes, is actually one of the phytochemicals most responsible for onions significant health benefits.
Use a very sharp knife and always cut the onions while standing; that way your eyes will be as far away as possible. If cutting onions really makes you cry, consider wearing glasses or goggles.

Trying running the onion under some cold water just prior to chopping it. That sometimes helps.
Some onions are just more potent than others. You might try using a small electric chopper. That way, you only have to peel and cut once or twice.

Your eyes burn via fact an allergic reaction to the oils interior the onion. once you decrease the onion, small cells interior the onion wreck and the oil is dispensed into the air. the terrific thank you to maintain your eyes from watering is to positioned on goggles that seal your eyes off. If the oil dosen't get into your eyes, you will no longer cry. With that being stated, in case you do no longer choose to look like a fool once you're ccutting onions there are some different issues you're able to do to decrease the crying. the 1st of that's be sure you have an enormously sharp knife. this might easily decrease during the onion minimizing the amout of oil thats thrown into the air. utilising a lifeless knive has a tendency to weigh down the cells rather of reducing cleanly via it throwing greater of the oil interior the air. yet another attitude is to diminish next to an open flame, it rather is often convienient in case you have a gasoline variety. in basic terms lite a burner, positioned it on severe, positioned your reducing board next to it. The flame will reason the close by air to upward push immediately. this might reason the oils interior the air to pass with it. Insteat of lingering around your face the oils would be pulled as we communicate up into the air.

Place the onion in the freezer, a cold onion isn't as smelly....
When you do feel like "crying", open the freezer and put your face close, the cold air will stop the sting. Washing your hands with lemon juice will get rid of the smell from your hands,
Happy chopping! :)

Wear goggles. It is the spray you get from sulfuric acid in the onions that when combined with your salty tears makes you cry. If you get an onion that doesn't make you cry it is not a very fresh one. I have heard if you refrigerate your onions this helps, however, I have failed to see how it does. lol Just par for the course.

try doing it with the onion cold. I never tear up when cutting onions, so I don't worry about it, but what causes you to cry is the oils that are in them. Good luck to you

after you take the outer skin of the onion get a bowl of water and put the onion in the water and squeeze the onion until there are no more bubbles coming out of the onion. when you do this you squeeze out the gases out.
