why not? i believe opus dei (made infamous by dan brown) flagellate (whip) themselves, during prayer, and it has a long and abiding history. some buddhist monks are hit with a stick (there's a special monk, who goes around with a stick, to do do it) if they seem to be flagging in their devotions (like being asleep). flagellation is a way of inducing a trance-like state that can help one concentrate on their prayer.

Iranians practice this sort of things. But, personally I don't think it is the proper way of praying. Prayer needs deep concentration to properly communicate with God. How can you possibly do this, if during your prayer you are hurting youself? Of course, there are rituals, but this is totaly different.

Self flagellation alone won't give you absolution, just welts/cuts. Only sincere confession and apology to God, and committment to not doing the sin again, and retribution for wrongs done to someone else, only these things will give one absolution. The absolution comes from God alone, not from any priest. It's only in God in His mercy that we have the hope of forgiveness. Whips are child's play in comparison.

No, unless you are a member of an Islamic sect who whips themselves as a symbol of submission to Allah.

You should rather practice interior mortification, because that won't boost your pride or ego.

Less time on the internet perhaps.

If you should still want to do this talk to a priest first and follow his advice, to obey takes a lot more than to physically abuse your body.

It depends on what church you belong to. Plenty of religions practice self flagellation or other self-inflicted suffering as a way to show humility and try to identify with a prophet's or martyr's suffering.

Yikes! why would anyone do that? If god wants someone whipped, he will make sure of that when he sends that someone to hell.

PS-Have you been reading Davinci code?

All the best people do it.
Though if you are very clever, like St. Catherine of Siena, you just pretend to do it.
Invisible stigmata was a stroke of genius.

Less painful, too.

There are certain religious rites that do involve scourging. Some done by others, some done to ones self.
