The reason was that Bulmers Ltd. did not own the trademark for Bulmers outside the Republic of Ireland.
The Magners name is derived from the name of local Clonmel man, William Magner, who in 1935 started cider production and founded the company which is today Bulmers of Clonmel.
The Magners and the Bulmers mirrors each other, the only diference is the brand name.

there is also an english cider known as bulmers which is brewed in taunton. so to avoid confusion the irish changed the name to magners on the mainland.

its down to international marketing they think giving the brand a catchy name will sell more. if they called it ma scroggins genuine irish crotch rot, nobody outside of ireland would buy it. without going down the "beghora" route they have been able to use the word irish as something stylish and upmarket and not tatty jumpers and donkeys
