I remember reading an old medical manuscript (forgotten which one) which incidentally mentioned a certain pope and was talking (in passing) about his concubines - Does anyone have any further details - did past popes have documented concubines?

outline "early". The prepare of proscribing marriage between the clergy (and through extension the Pope) did not come till the middle Age. i'm no longer positive that i might want to guage that "early" as a results of the undeniable fact that is more desirable than 0.5 way through the heritage of the Catholic church. It got here about following the autumn of the Roman Empire, at the same time as the Catholic church became the biggest company round, and became compelled through the project to step (for a time) right into a position of political skill. even with the undeniable fact that "evil" the church would have become on the instantaneous, it became nevertheless more desirable helpful than the anarchy that could want to have sweep Europe had the church no longer been there. throughout that factor, the church went through quite a few Popes who were no longer there to be religious leaders, yet because they needed political skill. That workplace (and maximum lower than it) the position typically bought, given as political want, and so on. So regularly the folk who held those places of artwork were very corrupt persons who allowed many stuff that were adversarial to the Christian faith. The prepare stopped in the course of the time of the Protestant reformation (1500s). With the splitting of the church, and far of its political skill, it became no longer an alluring position for persons in search of political skill. This allowed the Catholic church go back to the administration of moral, human beings, who positioned an end to such non-Christian practices.

Past popes have done nearly everything under the sun, sin-wise.
Hyslops "Two Babylons" (book) is a source for much of the documentation.

It would not surprise me. Long ago the church was the most powerful entity in Europe and rich, powerful men never go without their priviledges.

There is historical evidence of bishops, Priests etc having mistresses and illegitimate kids. All this sort of thing was what sparked the various reform movements who sought to break away from the Catholic Church, because they felt it was corrupt.

Past popes even had children! Now, what I don't know for a fact is if contemporary popes don't have sex any more, or if they can hide it better.

That's not all. The Marquis De Sade catalogued a damning list of vices of the pontiffs, it's quite heady stuff!
