Don't blame yourself. Other posters have said, quite accurately, that it isn't your fault if you had never been taught the right way to do the work.. And if you have been taught and simply forgot, well, okay, you're not perfect. What a shock, you're actually human. Who knew?
Sixty-three years have taught me one thing at least. I am not perfect. No one is perfect. We all make mistakes. We don't have infinite wisdom, infinite patience, infinite goodwill, infinite anything. What differentiates us from God is that we are tiny where He is immense. But he loves us anyway, even when we screw up.
The thing that's bothering you now, I suspect, is guilt. There is a simple way to handle that. Yes, offer to pay for the shirt yourself. Yes, apologize for the mistake and promise never to make it again. This is for your own benefit to help you feel better about yourself, not simply to please your boss or the customer.
And if your boss is also human, it will put him/her in a better mood too. If not, it's best to find out now so you can start looking for work someplace with competent management.
Best wishes. Don't be so hard on yourself.
If I'm not yet perfect, how can I let anyone else be?
Hope this helps.

hey everybody in this world makes mistakes, otherwise it would not be called a life. A life is journey of learning and making mistakes and then correcting those mistakes. Besides, u didn't know u had to put water in the clorox bleach, so somebody should have told you. anyway just say your sorry and it wont happed again. and ur boss will give u another chance, trust me. in all other cases, just take u boss outside and beat him up.

Couldn't you cover the cost of the shirt, or go 50-50 with him? I mean, idiots like me don't know much about bleach either, but I figure that if you're dealing with it, your boss should at least tell you some of the basics, but it's still your responsibility. That's why I'd sugguest trying to take some personal responsibility for it by paying off the debt.

I don't know about "karma"; sounds more like a little ignorance and lack of attention to detail.
Try this:
1. Apologize to your boss and the customer.
2. Offer to pay for the ruined garment.
3. Have a woman teach you how to clean a bathroom! Hint..next time don't use so much bleach..just a little goes a loooooong way.

read instructions next time, offer to pay for the shirt, it is not karma it is a simple mistake due to being a it lacking in the attention to what you are doing category, and tell your boss that it will never happen and if he or she feels that you should be demoted well it has to be done. Do not allow your boss to manipulate you into feeling excessively guilty of a simple mistake---some bosses can "persuade" you to do certain things for their them so that you can get back on the good side; be careful and do not make the mistake of not asking for directions and instructions---you are simply asking to get a better understanding of certain procedures.

If your boss had to pay for a new blouse for this lady because you made a mistake, then you should offer to reimburse your boss and just apologize again. Hopefully, that should be the end of it.
Everybody makes mistakes...and that's all it was...a mistake...not bad karma.

It was a simple mistake...and it was your boss that did not give you the proper training. Don't be so hard on yourself, see if the woman will accept your apology. In a month, this will never have existed!

Breathe dear. OK, now, if no one told you to put water in the bleach, you weren't getting hit with bad karma you created. I would guess your boss has a little karma account to settle, wouldn't you? Now, aren't you glad he won't look at you (you would read the guilt in his eyes).

how can it be stupid if you didn't know to dilute the bleach? Your boss should have trained you better. It is his fault. Let him buy her a new shirt, he can afford it. Just learn from this mistake and move on.

No it was an honest mistake. We all make them. Could you offer to pay for the shirt yourself?
