What does it mean if the tip needs sealed after a root canal?

It just means your tooth has to be sealed, the finishing touch, the rest of the tooth must be filled in. They do it in two parts, they wait to do the sealing to make sure you have no problems with infection and to let the filling set.

Assuming that you mean the top of the tooth and not the tip of the root... whtecloud is right. Most kinds of root canal filling materials are not supposed to exposed to saliva, because they are not impervious to saliva and bacteria, so they need to be sealed off from that environment. You might ask why this is so, but it's because the properties that make it possible to get the filling all the way to the end of the root are generally not compatible with materials that will form their own seal.

Sometimes, especially with back teeth, the "sealing" has to be done and then you need a crown to keep the whole tooth protected.
