If you live in a detached, single-family house in the suburbs or country, cats are absolutely tops at catching mice and keeping them out of the house and basement in the winter.

Cats are perfect predators, "Nature's masterpiece" as Leonardo da Vinci said of them.

You have to see this to believe it -- cats and humans have the fastest nervous systems of all animals. I've seen our pet cat snare and kill rattlesnakes. Right near our house, too. Incredible. The same cat killed a huge rat that winter that was almost as big as it was!

So that's what cats are good for, they keep vile critters away and patrol your property.

Cats are surprisingly good company, too. Cleveland Amory, once a cat hater, changed his mind when he took care of a stray cat and then wrote a famous book about it , "The Cat Who Came for Christmas."

Companionship, first and foremost. They are wonderful animals, very smart, and terrific pets. Pest control would be a secondary benefit for having a cat. They hunt and catch any kind of critter, not only mice and birds, but also spiders, crickets, and snakes. Why wouldn't you want a cat?

They make great doorstops- try to open a door when a cat is lying in front of it,
paperweights- they will sit on anything you happen to be reading or writing on,
and they test your sanity on a daily basis.
They're wonderful and I wish I had half a dozen or so.

(I can't have any in my apt, BTW)

Cats are good for loving. They won't bite random people like dogs would.
