I'm looking for some change in my life. I'm 39 years old, the people I work with really suck--they're in their mid forties, childish, hateful and vindictive. It's a little freaky. I don't want to be there anymore. I've never been particularly good at or interested in one thing in particular. Is there some kind of, I don't know, survey or something I can take that would help me focus? My brother is outgoing, a people person, a good salesperson; my sister is an artist. I am not either or any of those things, and I cannot think of one thing at all about myself that I can work with. I feel like I know the answer, but have this big solid wall in front of me that I can't get around or through.

(I'd like to add that I am not envious of my brother and sister; I'm very proud of them.)

I felt the same way for a long time. When I went to college out of High School, everyone was pressuring me to find out my major right away and plan out my life right then. I had no idea what I wanted to do and I got burned out about college really quick. I only went for a couple years. Now that I am married with two kids, I realized how much I love to garden. So now I am trying to start my own backyard nursery. I don't know very much yet, but I am learning with every step I take. It relaxes me and I enjoy it so much. I will be selling my first plants at a flea market in a couple months. I am so excited! Try to find something you love to do and see if you can make money from it! Good Luck

Of course you could always take an aptitude test to find where your best talents are, but, you should know yourself better than anyone. Think really hard about something that you have always enjoyed doing. Usually it can be turned into a career. Examples: Do you sing, draw , work on cars, gamble, cook? There are all kinds of possibilities. Remember, You can achieve what your mind can conceive. Good luck.

You are totally not alone. I went to college for seven years, changed my discipline three times (accounting, computers, engineering). In the mean time I was working for years with a chemical company. I have been into chemistry for 30 years. I do enjoy it. NO degree.
What I am trying to say, you have to keep trying. Just because you are not into sales, or an artist, so what? Don't be envious, consider them fortunate.

Try different things. A lot of things if it takes that many to figure out what you are good at and what you like. Ask your brother and sister for advise on how to find that. What intrests you? Start with that and answer it and go with your answers.

Tough one.
At your age I bought my first computer (kit). Found that this was really something I wanted to do and have become extremely good at.
What you need to do is find something you could be passionate about. Something you'd like doing so much, you would even do it in your 'off' time.
If you do something you enjoy, you get good at it quickly. And as you become better at it you like it even more. It sort of feeds on itself.
If you can't find ANYTHING you really would like to do, all that is left is to mark time until it's time for you to draw social security.
If that's all I had to do I'd be bored to death...
I wish you luck!

If you have a friend, sit down with them and talk about your hobbies, take some classes thru community education at adult education or community college.
