If you were told "here's a 5-horsepower engine only - now choose a boat hull that makes that go as fast as possible", what would you suggest?

a hydrofoil boat,
This type of hull has a wings mounted under it. When it gaines speed, it lifts the entire boat out of the water, reducing drag resulting in higher speed. (I saw some1 making this with a surfing board and a moped enigine, the damn thing went pretty fast 2!!)

Hmm. 5 hp.

Thats not much to work with the fastest boat hull for a 5 hp would probably be a displacement hull. The problem with that hull is that the speed is related to the length. Thats why a canoe works well.

If you had a little more horsepower you might consider a planing hull where the entire hull acted like a hydrofoil and lifted itself out of the water. But I don't think 5 hp would be enough to get it out of the water.

Same with hydrofoils to lift it out of the water. Till you got up to speed you'd have to overcome the drag of the hydro-foils under water, I don't think 5 hp is going to be able to overcome the drag and actuall get the boat up on the foils.

Propeller handbook the complete reference for choosing, installing, and understanding boat propellers

it hasn't been built yet....but when you do it's a combo of a hydro plane that blows a stream of compressed air over theb hull.....similiar to a balistic torpedo...the jets in a hot tub are the reverse....iunteresting project....the canoes of old were probably most [pardon the pun] arrow dynamic
