Of course, the Bible is not a single book, but a collection of books written by many different authors, for many different purposes, over many, many years. Many have found inspiration from God in its pages, and some go as far as saying that the words of the Bible are equal to the words of God; this fact alone should indicate that the writings of the Bible are worth investigating.
While the Bible is believed by most Christians to be the "words of God", it is also the words of the people who wrote it - individuals (the "prophets" and the "apostles" etc), and communities (the histories of Israel and the early church). These people have experienced God in many ways, and have recorded their individual and corporate experiences.
The Bible does NOT contain the answers to all our questions, or even answers to all the fundamental or important ones. It does provide a guide that leads us into a community (that is, to the church), and ultimately to a person - probably the most sigificant person in human history (even athiests could agree with that). If there was any who "fit the bill" for a claim to the title of Messiah, it was this man.
It is interesting that he did not write anything himself (that we know of, at least). His "mission" was to lead by example, to show us how to love God and to love others, and to declare us forgiven in the eyes of God, should that be our desire. The truthfulness of his teachings and example has been verified in a spectacular way - "God raised him from the dead, and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem" (Acts 13:30-31, NIV).
Anyway, you said that you've only read the first book, so I guess I'm giving away the ending, aren't I?
Peace and blessing

Find a Bible commentary.
I have a Christian commentary that helps me to understand it better and put the stories in context...I think that a Jewish commentary would be best since Genesis is Jewish mythistory (it's not 'just a book'...). It is the only book of the Bible so far that I have studied to some extent, and I think that you can get a lot out of it...=)

You sound like a little mixed up.
First the Bible has more than one book.
First century Christians took the scriptures they thought belonged in the canon and then gave them chapters and numbered verses.and put them together as on large canon...Or as we refer to it as the Bible...many books.
So you read the first book Genesis written by Moses...were you enlighten?

Many people believe that the Bible is either the word of God or inspired by God and, therefore, to them the Bible is not just a book.

Pick up a copy of "Misquoting Jesus" by Bart D. Ehrman and "101 Myths of the Bible" by Gary Greenberg. Or just google it and read the synopsis.

Well, no. It's not a book like any other. I believe the bible is a book written by men who were inspired by God. It is the history of a nation...Israel. It is the promise of the Messiah who will save us from our sins, and it the fulfillment of that promise in Jesus Christ.
It is a place to go to find comfort, guidance, wisdom, beauty, love, peace and forgiveness.
It's word is living and active. Following what Jesus teaches can transform your life.
No, it's not "just" a book. It is a treasure that anyone can mine every day for the rest of their lives.
