aren't the 10 commandments supposed to be obeyed?

The first Christians were Jews. They went to temple or synagogue on the Sabbath (Saturday) with fellow Jews

Then they gathered on the first day of the week, the day on which Jesus rose from the dead (Sunday), with fellow Christians to tell stories of Jesus and share Eucharist.

Later Gentiles joined Christianity. The Apostles, filled with the Holy Spirit, decided that the Gentiles did not have to covert to Judaism. Therefore, they only attended on Sundays and did not have to abide by Jewish dietary laws.

Christians believe that Jesus' Resurrection has changed the Lord's Day from Saturday to Sunday.

This has been the practice ever since.

With love in Christ.

The ten commandments were directed to the Isrealites under the Law of Moses. We are now in the New Testament era.
We keep 9 of the ten commandments today because they are repeated in the New Testament, either directly or in principle.

"Remember the Sabbath day", however, is nowhere commanded in the New Testament. In fact, no one is to judge us based on keeping of Sabbath days. In fact that law has been "nailed to the cross". (Colossians 2:14-16).

To show we are no longer under the ten commandments, look at Romans 7 which teaches we are no longer under "the law". Part of that law was "thou shalt not covet" (verse 7). This command was found in the 10 commandments.

We should still not covet, not because of the ten commandments, but because this principle was taught in the New Testament.

Nowhere does the New Testament, however, instruct us to keep the Sabbath. In fact, the New Testament teaches Christians to meet upon the first day of the week. (Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2)

Because the 10 cammondments are a part of the law, and we are no longer under law, but grace.

Furthermore Saturday worship was a type and shadow of thins to come in the new and better covenant. Jesus was first seen on a Sunday after His ressurection and the disciples gathered together with Him on a Sunday. It is true the Sabbath Day fell on a Saturday, but the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. Grace says, do not forsake the gathering of yourselves together. It does not command a day, and so there is a choice. But again, we are no longer under the law, but grace.

In the New Testament the Sabbath was transferred to Sunday (in the Jewish Calendar, the 1st day of the week): Acts 20:7, 1 Cor 16:1-2, Rev 1:10

Reading all the answers above only reminds me of a very sad situation. Almost all those who answered your question are deceived into thinking that God does not care what day they worship Him on. Many think keeping the 7th day was only for the old testament. Many think it was nailed to the cross. Many think the day was changed to Sunday in the New Testament. Some even think the 4th commandment does not indicate what day should be worshiped. They all seem to think they know what they are talking about. All of these ideas are incorrect. It is my prayer that these false ideas can be overcome with the truth in these peoples lives so that they can become true believers in the creator God of the Bible.

If they want to learn the truth they should take the Bible studies and read the books on the website amazingfacts.org.

I'm sorry. I must have missed something somewhere along the line here. I don't recall a commandment that says go to church on Saturdays.

Want to follow the Pope? People say it is a Jewish thing but there were no Jews at the time when it was made. If people would just read their bible and compare it to history, they could see a lot of what the churches are telling them are lies. Guess that is why God says there will be lots more that go to Hell than to Heaven.

I go three times a week. My Sabbath is on Sunday, I go twice then, and once on Wednesday. The Lord set no specific Holy Day. He just said remember the Sabbath and keep it Holy. It is up to the church or even the individual, what day this should be to them. As for me, I will stick to Sunday. After all these years, I have gotten kind of used to it and don't want to change. You go to church when you want to, but please go.

In retrospect, didn't Jesus say something about undoing all of the old laws when he showed up? That would actually include the ten commandments, which were from Moses. That being said, however, that would sugguest they shouldn't be outside the Justice Department building either.
