I've been to Thailand many times, in my younger days. I would never go back. But, my favorite place was Chaing Mai, in the north.

First of all you have to try live here first. Thailand is a good place to visit as tourist, but to live here is a complete other thing. You will see and discover many bad things if you not keep a very low profile. But why you not ask some of the many foreigners living here already. Then you can get first hand advice. And dont marry your g/f right away. Stay together at least 1 year first and see how it goes. Then you know.
You are welcome to mail me at "thlo@asiamail.com" I live here for many years.

It is my plan to marry my g/f there, who currently runs a beauty salon in Pattaya, have her live with me here in the UK, which she wants to do, until I retire, and then move to Thailand in around 13 years time. At that time, I would hope to live somewhere quiet, near the sea, but still within relatively easy reach of a larger town or city. I have been to Chiang Mai and like it, but it doesn't meet my requirements. So, I'm thinking of somewhere near Rayong or Chantaburi, but we've plenty of time to decide.

Cha am is 220kms south of Bangkok. It is a seaside resort where the prices are still not tourist prices.Just 25kms down the road you have Hua Hin which is a very busy bustling city with many of your home comforts such as Tesco and Boots.Spain 30 years ago.

Frankly if you like, you can live anywhere in Thailand. There are still many places that are not opened to tourist and are just as beautiful. I will say go and look around and find a place you like. That will be your choiciest.

Depends on many things , if you need other farangs to talk to , how much money you have , and what you really need to live here , but anywhere out of the cities is ok , i live in Buriram. If you live near the sea things are more expensive and where do you go for a break ?

Big city of course is Bangkok. Quiet, smaller beach city yet with everything you need or want is Hua Hin. about 2 to 3 hours South west of BKK.

For me Phuket but not Patong or Phuket town. I think there are so many good places in Thailand but it depends on each individual what your needs, expectations etc. are. Good luck in finding the best!

Long way from tourist places. The more near you stay tourist places - the more expensive.
And simply living is for me Thai style living - for around 100$ /month
