An engineer is a white collar worker, who typically won't be working on the plant operations itself. But behind the scenes, EEs would do a whole host of plant studies: optimal loading of the generators, optimal frequency control, scheduling of maintence of machines, short-circuit studies and system planning, commissioning of new electrical equipment, contingency studies, etc. Among EE fields, the power engineer is the worst paid. You can expect to start at $45k in a year, and saturate at about $80k after several years.

EE's work all over the place. Every tech company employs an army of them. Starting salary for EE's is around $45k. Without a Masters, or w/o going in to tech sales or project management, you can expect to reach a salary cap rather quickly of around $70k (today's equivelent) in about 10 - 15 years.
