Balding can be a hereditary factor. It could be a hormone inbalance, or extreme stress, grief or shock.
To begin with if it is hereditary there may not be much you can do to help.
Have your mom try the following: Massage her scalp everyday as often as she would like, but a least once a day. This will promote the natural circulation of blood, oxygen, and oil production, which helps to improve hair growth.Tell her to give it a couple weeks to see if she notices a change, if she notices a difference in the appearance of her hair; such as shine, body, then it is helping, it may take a little longer to see growth improvement. If not ask her to see her family physician it could be something medical, not anything serious, but something the dr. could help with.
Good luck.
And by the way, I think that it is a very sweet thing that you are concerned and want to help your mom.

I had a problem with balding a few years back that was cured by multiple sessions of cortisone shots about 3 times; sometimes, though, it's irreversible, but you can have "plugs" put in or maybe a transplant from another part of her head; Oh, and dude, if your mom is going bald, chances are you probably will too....

First of all--wow--it is so cool that you care about your Mum. Encourage her to see a dermatologist. Hormone replacement could help, as could Rogaine. Its also possible that she's having thyroid trouble, so a doc should investigate that as well. Finally, has she changed her diet? Getting too little fat/protein/Omega 3 fatty acids/vitamins can also cause people to lose hair.

This can be caused by serious illness, heredity or other factors - such as stress combined with horrible hair products, so first you have to get to the bottom of it; the answer to that may give you the treatment for it.
