It's not just stupid people. It's humans in general. For some reason we are hard wired to pick shapes, especially faces, out of random patterns. Everyone can see "the man in the moon". Of course it is culturally biased as to what people see. Note the woman in the article is a Mexican. Mexican culture is predominantly Catholic and, because of their macho culture, very matriarchal in nature. They have a tendency to make Mary a diety. A "face" made from rock and shadow seen in a photo of Mars taken by a Soviet satillite was thought by everyone in the Soviet Union to look like Lenin.

Because for some people, food is a religion. Doesn't it make sense that Mary would pop up in an object that people worship?
What I don't get is, how come she doesn't show up in, say, video games or on movie screens or on stage during a play or something? How come she never texts me? How come she just shows up to illiterate country bumpkins and in mildew stains? You'd think she'd have some new tricks after all this time.

Because the world has gone to helll in a hand basket, people are searching for answers and turning to their faith. When they find these "virgin Mary's" or faces of Jesus, it reinforces their belief in a higher power. I wouldn't necessarily call them "stupid", they are just looking for signs that a higher power does exist.

Because, like the number 42, the pattern of the "Virgin" shows up frequently in nature. I mean, at its base it is really simple, just a few squiggles around the edge... it's not as detailed as you might think.

Yeah, that would be creepy if your toilet started saying,"walk into the light"
Or maybe, people see her in those things because anything that's distinguishable into a face, they try to interpret into a face of their religion. People, subconsiously, try to find a support or logic in their minds, when something is inexplicable, they revert to reasons around them. When people are overcome with stress, they even feel physical pain.

They're more observant and more willing to see her. You know, she's been appearing to you for years in different guises--the stain on your favorite shirt, the bubbles in your pancake, and that really big pimple on your nose--but you aren't looking for her, so you do not see. How sad.

I don't know, but it's funny how Catholics always want to see Mary and not Jesus.
