No. Locating the stethoscope would cost you time and it might be too noisy, for you to be able to hear. Thirdly, if you're not a nurse or a doctor, you might not place the diaphragm of the stethoscope in the right place to hear it.
Even doctors don't use the stethoscope, in an emergency.
Press your fingers on one side of the CENTER of the throat.
Try it on yourself and look in the mirror to see where your fingers are when you feel it.
Next time, if something happens, you'll know right where to place your fingers on the unconcious person.
Always give breaths first before heart massage.
Give breaths, often. This lowers the chance of brain dammage and increases their chances of survival.
Good Luck!

Just check the pulse. Even if you do hear a heartbeat with a stethoscope, it may not be perfusing the extremities well. So if they don't have a pulse, you should start CPR.

In my classes, I would say no, just because it would take longer.
Remember, we don't care about the pulse rate or quality- JUST is there one or not, and we want to determine this fast so we can go from the checking for consciousness step to compressions in about 30 seconds.
The scope might pick up a fainter pulse better, but the odds are that I can do it with my fingers faster and just as reliably in most cases.

I'm sure your instuctor want to see if you know how to check for a pulse. It sounds like your in a CPR class.Did he/she mention Look-Liston-Feel? Look for the chest to rise and fall. Liston for air moveing (mouth/nose). Feel for cardic pulse. My answer to you is NO don't use a stethoscope. Good luck on your course, you'll do fine

no. thats wrong way. you have to check airway even before feeling the pulse, if airway is secure then you have to look and feel for breathing. if person is breathing then you go and check for pulse(by hand not by stethescope). if person is not breathing give two rescue breaths and then proceed to check the pulse. There is no use of stethescope in cpr. heart might be beating but there may not be any pulsation (ineffective heart beat) like in tension pneumothorax. so you have to fix the breathing problem first.

The point of checking the pulse is to see if the heart is pumping (duh) and the fastest way is just to feel for one at the neck. Using the stethoscope...im not sure but its definately not as fast as just feeling for a pulse.
