The most underlying difference is a belief that knowledge and truth are located outside of the body/mind (realism), and romanticism locates truth within the body/mind (romanticism). In other words, the dominant philosophy in the romantic period believes all truth is Subjectice, and the Realist philsophy believes that there is a factual, observable universe in which truth exists independent of who observes it. Everything else springs from this distinction.

If you're talking about painting you can say that realist painter try to express what they are watching.(that's the reason why they paint landscapes mostly.)
Romantic painters express values and feelings. Such as honor, freedom, love. They also show exotic images like in
Algerian Women in Their Apartments (Delacroix)
