I doubt they "keep getting it". It's more likely that the original infestation has not been cleared out properly. When my girs had it, we used an over the counter lice shampoo to kill the lice, but you still have to CAREFULLY comb out, a few strands at a time, EVERY hair to get all the nits. Nits look like dandruff and can be anywhere from white to black in colour, but unlike dandruff, they stick to the shaft of the hair and will not move unless you grasp the hair and run your fingernails from the root all the way to the tip.
What I did was after the shampoo, I doused my daughters hair in a good dose of olive oil which I made sure what all over the scalp - lice won't live in dirty hair, so the oil is a good thing. I let them sleep with a shower cap on, and in the morning, I would wash their hair out and then while it's wet I made them comfortable in the living room so that they could lay their head on a towel on the coffee table - I put a movie in so they could watch and then i combed. every hair on their head. yes - it's the ONLY way you will get rid of them. you have to have patience and don't use the products in a hurry - follow every instruction to a T and do what I told you with the oil. Repeat the oil every day for at least 5 days, then do the re-shampoo with the lice product, then oil for another 2 days or so. It's hard, it's tiring and it's boring, but you have to do it. Keep them cheered, be patient, and whatever you do - don't blame them. They could have gotten lice anywhere, not just from the neighbourhood kids...... hope this helps

First, lice are not caused by being dirty, they actually prefer freshly shampooed heads for those foolishly mean people who feel the need to insult a legitimate question.
As for the lice, confine the children indoors (sorry little tikes) for three days and treat them with Rid or something similar. Use the Nit picker and wash the bedding. Make sure you have gotten rid of the lice in your home before sending them out to infect others. Most likely everyone is just passing is around.
Vinegar and baby oil is a really good deterrent. Give the little people's heads a dowsing before sending them into the neighborhood will help prevent the darned things from coming back. Nevertheless, you will need to inspect your children's head nightly until you move or the lice do.
Hope some of this helps. Good Luck.

Nit picker is a real term.
You must follow the directions on the bottle of lice killer. I have had many foster kids infested and following the directions are the only way. It is a lot of work. Washing washing washing. PIcking nits. Doing the whole family. Bagging stuffed animals. Spraying all furniture. The care seats...it goes on and on. Have a nit picking party.

My daughter came home one day from school and I noticed it in her hair also, buy a good lice shampoo and a lice comb then wash with the shampoo it will be like an oil and you should let it sit in her hair for aslong as the shampoo says, I let it sit for an hour then I combed through her hair for about 2 hours making sure I got every egg removed, its disgusting but you will have to put the egg between your two thumb nails and squash it to make sure they don't hatch and come back, also keep checking for a couple of days. Also do this for yourself in case and wash all bedding in hot water and air out the pillow and mattress if possible. Vacuum the couch or you can buy a powder from the pharmacy to powder under the cushions to make sure to get your house rid of them. Good luck.

Just keep washing their hair with lice shampoo like RID and comb out the nits is all you can do really...unless they're boys then just shave their head for now. Talk to the other kids parents and if they are not trying to treat the problem on their own kids, call DHS....those kids need to be takin care of.
And steven d......hot water makes them worse....you can't poor hot enough water on your head to do anything. I really hope you don't have children.

you have to wash EVERYTHING in your house, car, boat, lawn furniture....etc. and shampoo the kids and adults and then constantly comb the nits out of EVERYONES hair until it is completely gone. With a nit comb. Even one nit will start it all over again. Once you get rid of it, keep some gel or hairspray in everyones hair, this keeps them from wanting to live in the hair. Lice like clean hair, so anything that makes it taste bad to them........

When I had lice, the best treatment for me was Tea Tree Oil Shampoo. It's real natural stuff and it won't really hurt your kids eyes if it accidentally gets into them. I think you can buy it at any big store, like Dominicks or Target even.
As for your other question, try Wikipedia.com
