There are these devices that when you pull a pin out or push a button, they make a loud screeching sound. Does anyone know what they are called or where someone could buy one?

They are called "Personal Alarms." I couldn't find one at Sharper Image (or Brookstone for that matter), but if you go to amazon.com and search on Personal Alarm you will get several tasty choices.

I don't know about you, but if I heard one of these go off, I don't know if I would run to assist or not. There are way too few cops around for this to be effective. Pepper spray is another option you can get through Amazon, but this doesn't work on an attacker that is drunk or drugged up. as they won't feel it. Also, in many states like MA, you need a permit for pepper spray. Tasers are illegal to carry also. Many times, the same form to get a pepper spray permit is the same one to get a pistol permit. This is an obvious message - don't waste your time with the pepper, get a real pistol, preferably high-capacity.
