I mentioned that I was reading a book about Buddism and one lady almost bit my head off!!!! I was raised a Christian but I think lots of other religions have something to teach us. What's the big deal -- does that make me a bad Christian?

There is a fear that studying another religion might lead you from the "one true religion". I've even seen where comparisons between Buddhism and Christianity have been made - particularly the lives, work, and teachings of Siddhartha and Jesus - but the one's from a Christian perspective always refute Buddhism as a false religion, regardless of all the good that can be found in it.

The Dharma is provided for all who wish to study it. Unfortunately, man religions do not encourage anything beyond the study of their own beliefs, rituals, and text (as noted below by the comment to the effect that "all you need is the Bible.")

I'm the same way. I am Christian as well, but respect more Buddists than I do Christians. There is a lot to be learned from Buddism, and that lady needs to lighten up. Peace man.

Depends on why you are reading the material and how strong your faith/belief in Christ is. If you are reading to gain an understanding in what others believe so you can be a more effective witness in the world to those people, then it'd be good to educate yourself (or do it in a group!). But if your faith isn't strong in Christ, and the reading of the material causes you to question your own faith, then it wouldn't be advisable to continue with the study.

ALTHOUGH, if it does cause you to come up with some good questions about Christianity, be determined to find out the answers! Christianity has nothing to hide...for almost 2000 years!

Peace bro!

No that makes the lady who bit your head off a narrow minded individual with a bad attitude. Many Christians think Buddhists are atheists. They don't understand Buddhism and don't want to. You want to understand other belief systems? Good for you. That is commendable.

Buddhims is itself an outgrowth of Hinduism suited. yet i know of no particular prohibition interior the two against what we'd call idols interior the Western international. the only Buddhist temple I even have ever visited replaced into exterior Seoul, and contained an enormously super statue of Buddha. The priest of the temple presented incense and prayers to the statue. .

Yo yea it does you shouldnt be a christian at all it doesnt make sense it is an ignorant view on life it is morally corrupt and should be illegal. However many christians are ignorant and therefore uneducated about buddhism and feel threatened.

No need for anyone to "bite your head off" *smile*...I went to a lecture once about Buddhism, because I think it's a good idea to know about other people's beliefs. I hope you know that Jesus is the only way to God. That's the only important thing I would want to say to you.

They are scared that other religions have validity or that the equality of all religions would mean that none are true which in turn rendrs their life meaningless.
