You can't go wrong with Macaroni and Cheese. Almost all Americans love it:

Mac & Cheese
1/2 pound macaroni, cooked
2 cups Cheese Sauce (see below)
1/2 cup grated sharp Cheddar cheese
1/2 cup freshly made buttered bread crumbs

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Butter a 1 1/2-quart casserole. Put the cooked macaroni into the casserole, pour the cheese sauce over it, and mix gently with a fork. Sprinkle the grated cheese evenly over the top and spread the crumbs over the cheese. Bake, uncovered, until the top is golden and the sauce is bubbling, about 30 minutes.

Cheese Sauce:
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons flour
1 1/4 cups milk, heated
1/2 cup shredded cheese (typically cheddar, but use what you have)
Salt
Freshly ground pepper

Melt the butter in a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Stir in the flour and cook, stirring constantly, until the paste cooks and bubbles a bit, but don't let it brown — about 2 minutes. Add the hot milk, continuing to stir as the sauce thickens. Bring it to a boil. Add salt and pepper to taste, lower the heat, , add cheese and cook, stirring for 2 to 3 minutes more. Remove from the heat.

The american pallet is very diversified and sometimes picky so don't think that you're a bad cook because your dessert didn't go over well -- it's probably just unfamiliarity.

For what you have handy, I'd toss together the raw shrimp, garlic, onion, and chicken (baked with herbs, skinned and diced) with rice and chill it.

For more flavor you can marinade the chicken after its baked with a little soy sauce, sesami oil and ginger.

To this land and sea rice salad, add a greek or italian styled vinagarette (maybe a hint of dill or basil, salt and pepper). People are amazed by rice salads and the rice accomodates a lot of flavors. If you want decorate the top with sliced hard boiled eggs.

Another option is to use a yogurt or sour cream type dressing, but I think the oil-vinegar combo pleases more people generally.

Go to http://www.foodtv.com - the food network site- to look for ideas. If you are cooking for a lot of people, go with chicken. Most Americans like chicken. Many Americans do not eat red meat, and even more do not eat seafood. If you do a search for chicken recipes on the food network site, each recipe will have a 1-5 star rating. These ratings are given by the average American who visits the web site, so it will give you a good idea of how much each recipe appeals to the average American taste.

Americans like to eat a lot of things. Make some beef stir fry with garlic and green onions, macaroni casserole with cheese, sauteed squash with garlic and onions, and bake some chicken with lemon juice, garlic and herbs. Make a green salad with a variety of dressings and buy a store bought chocolate cake with some vanilla ice cream for dessert. Happy cooking!

Things that go well for meetings and get togethers are casseroles. Any kind works well, like chicken casserole, tuna casserole.
Deviled eggs are great and look pretty when serving. You can add olives on top or anything else for garnish. Mix it up for variety.
Macaroni salad is nice too. I use elbow macaroni, frozen peas, cheese and sweet relish mixed with Miracle Whip and whipping cream. Top it off with paprika garnish. Yummy! Everyone likes salads.
Fried chicken or baked is good too.
I bake my acorn squash in the oven for a hour with a dab of butter and brown sugar. Delicious!
Good luck - hope that helps!

Quiche is a great idea. But if I had what you have on hand, I would skip the macaroni and just make a stir fry. Or kabobs with the veggies inbetween the meats and broiled or baked till done. I would serve the squash as its own side with lots of butter and salt.

I can't begin to tell you specific recipes. I recommend you go to your local library if you have one or a bookstore and get an American cookbook to give you plenty of recipes. Also, there are probably a number of website too that have recipes. Search under the terms "Recipes American Cooking", "Cooking" etc. you should be able to find a site today so you can get started.

Make Shrimp Scampi. Cook the shrimp up in some oil and garlic, and toss it together with the pasta Top with some cheese and basil. Make a salad and some dinner rolls. It's pretty simple to make, you can't really screw it up.

oo wow, I was gonna say barbeque since all americans love that, you sure you cant borrow a neighbors grill? well you can easily make barbeque chicken and hamburgers, if it's fancy add in some potatoes, if its informal add french fries! Just marinade the chicken in barbeque sauce and and either grill or bake it. As for the hamburgers, if you dont know how to make those stick to hotdogs.
