Yes, you can contact your vet and inform him or her of the situation. They will give you some acepromazine to help keep them calm. Or, you can try a natural product called Bach's Rescue Remedy. It is awesome. Instead of having to give your dogs a pill like you would have to do with the ace, all you have to do with the Rescue Remedy is place a drop under their tongues.

Explain your situation to the vet and let him make the call. But I can't imagine the dogs sleeping for the ride of 9 nine days without eating, exercise or relieving themselves.
Your vet can best advise what you should do.
Have a safe trip.

My Vet gives my Dog pills that will knock her out for about 8 hours. She is still groggy when she is coming out of there control. I have only driven 8 hours at a time. The pills are great. I make her a comfortable place on the seat next to me and she sleeps like a baby. For Nine days of driving I would talk to your Vet and get the pills and see how your dog reacts to driving. Make a lot of stops to let your dog strength legs. When they are on the pills it is funny to see them try to walk or go potty. If you use the Air conditioner, give water, it can dehydrate them. Happy Driving

The vet probably will give you a sedative for the dogs if you explain why. There are some products at some pet stores designed to calm them in the car as well. Also, just to let you know...assuming you're in the US and taking them across state lines...you need to have health certificates for them and they need to be current on vaccinations. Your vet should have them...they generally just need to do a checkup to fill it out. They'll need a checkup anyway for prescription sedatives so you may as well ask about the certificates when you make the appointment.

Your vet will most certainly get you something to keep your dogs from being stressed. Sometimes they will fight the tranquilizer and make it worse. Please look into some of the natural alternatives as one of the other posters mentioned.
Oh, and as for the vet tech who told you that you would need health papers? That is for livestock, not dogs. I have driven all over the US many times with dogs & cats. You do not need health papers.

You want to tranquilize your dogs for 9 days?! Why don't you find a nice kennel for them. They'll be much more comfortable and have fun at a doggy bed and breakfast. It's worth the cost!!

each and each Christmas we drove from Portland, Oregon to Sacramento, California (as we communicate via) to pass to my dad's brother and kin. there have been 7 human beings (5 teenagers) in a Buick sedan. It replaced into exceedingly crowded! there's a mountain variety between Oregon and California and my dad believed that tire chains have been for sissies, so we used to have some exceedingly hair-elevating moments on those journeys. The longest holiday, in spite of the undeniable fact that, replaced into from Oregon to Maryland, to work out his mum and dad, different siblings, cousins, etc. Maryland replaced into the place maximum of my dad's kin lived. We did no longer have the money for resorts, so we camped out each and every night of the holiday. We additionally did no longer have the money to consume in eating places, so my mom made food for us alongside the way from groceries we offered at small markets. We discovered a lot of "highway video games" on that holiday! I keep in mind it being greater of an journey than a hassle, although right this moment's teenagers might probable no longer have the skill to think of a visit around the entire U.S. without a single digital gadget to entertain them. (This replaced into interior the previous due Forties.)

Would the vet give you tranquilizers? i doubt it -- it's very hard to drive on a trip if you've been taking tranquilizers ;-)

Your Vet will give you ace to help calm the dogs. Just give them enough to take off the edge though.
