Why is it people don't know how to merge onto or off of the highway?

Hi, most people are to much in a hurry and don't give a damn if they hit you,or cause a seriours accident.Being courtesy on the road is dead and gone.Thats why you have to drive defenselessly know matter where you are.

I think there are several types of drivers, and reasons.

Some people are intimidated by the merging experience, so they are overly cautious and accelerate very slowly. They might even wait at the end until there is a clear spot to merge into. They are cautious for various reasons - unfamiliar with highway driving, inexperienced, timid, etc.

Other people just think that the other vehicles should allow them to merge on the highway by slowing down and opening a wide space.

In reality, merging involves two drivers who both have equal responsibilty. It's illegal (and stupid) to speed up on the freeway to close off a gap and cut off the merging driver. It's not smart and dangerous to wait at the end of the merge lane, or to force yourself into a too-small gap.

In Calif, they intentionally do not post Yield signs on merging lanes because both the freeway and merging vehicles have responsibility to drive carefully and safely. By making it somewhat gray, both drivers are responsible, and either could be at fault in an accident.

On a 3 or more lane highway, I prefer to drive in the 2nd from right lane if possible, to avoid dealing with too much on and off merging traffic.

I know what you mean, why would you merge onto a busy highway going 20 mph under the speed limit? Seems a tad dangerous to me.

Perhaps they are trying to conserve fuel by acclerating gently when merging.

Inattention gets the most blame in merging off the highway.

Carelessness dominates both cases.
