good answers. The problem with drinking socially is that the physical body develops a TOLERANCE to the alcohol; and then more alcohol is required for the effect. If you ever wake-up consistently with hangovers, shaky hands and DT's, those are WARNING SIGNS!

It doesn't always happen but if it does, that's definitely going to be the way it starts. Nobody starts off as a problem drinker.

That's not trues, just because you are a social drinker doesn't make you an alcoholic. The difference in social drinkers and alcoholics is that alcoholic doesn't know when to stop and can't live with out the alcohol. Social drinker's are those who drink when out with friends or at parties or have the occasional glass of alcohol. They know when to stop and can live without the alcohol.

For some people, yes. Problems drinkers have a chemical imbalance or as you might call it an "allergy" to alcohol. But unlike regular allergies, once the problem drinker consumes any alcohol at all, he/she gets a tremendous craving for alcohol and will go to almost any length to satisfy the craving. Many times it is impossible to stop without outside help, and even the drinker who wants to stop will have lost the ability to do so on their own.

Oh dear Lord.
That statement suggest that people are completely Unable to exercise self-control .
How do you define problem drinking, anyways.
I have a couple of glasses of wine or a couple of beer nearly every day. Occasionally I have more, yet I am healthy, wealthy and wise(enough). Do I have a Problem.

not necessary. The key word in this case is moderation. If you take alcohol is small amounts and not every day day then no. If you drink as much as you can as fast as you can then yes. Slow and steady wins the race.

The whole point is to never, and I do mean NEVER, do anything to excess. Alcohol, in reasonable amounts, can add enjoyment to your life. Overdo it and you can ruin your health, life and the lives of others. The same applies to sex, drugs, food & darn near everything else.

God, I sound just like my father!

Have fun. Just don't go crazy.

Yes. And why do you think they refer to liquor as "spirits"...as in bad spirits.

People don't seem to understand that if there is alcohol addiction in their family, they are much more predisposed to becoming addicted to alcohol just with the first drink.

It totally depends on the person. I have known alot of people who struggle with it. Most people move on to other problems than just drinking...it ruins their live, relationships...etc.....Be happy with what you have.
