I am moving to a new state and had planned to mail most of my clothing. I packed them in two cardboard boxes sealed with packing tape. In one of the boxes is a framed painting. But now, I've decided to just check these two big boxes on the airplane because they are too big and heavy to mail (too expensive). But now I'm worried that if I check them on the plane, will they have to open up the boxes? I'm worried about the painting that is inside one of the boxes--that it will get damaged if someone rummages through my boxes, and also I'm wondering whether they will let me check the boxes on the plane at all. I know that if you have locks on your luggage, they break open the locks, but what about sealed cardboard boxes?

If you take as baggage you can be 100% sure your box's well be open at airport. And it well be done out of your sight.
And if there over 50lb you well pay more.
Send them UPS or FedEx about same price and they well not be open and you can insure.
Some of the above answers are talking about carry on bags. Yours sounds to big for carry on. So you can be sure more than just x ray well be done

They'll X-ray them so you may get lucky and not have to open them; be advised though that you just might have to because they do that kind of thing on a random basis. Also, take some extra packing tape in case they do... that way you can seal them back up. After the deal over in London, expect longer waits and heightened security... I figure they'll continue to be more diligent as terrorist activities continue to make everyone's life more miserable.

I'd really check with your airline or travel agent or your transportation authority. I know they don't like wrapped gifts in checked luggage after 2001 so sealed and taped boxes probably would get opened. Wise to check for sure.

usually, they just put them under the xray thingy mabob and if it looks like there is something dangerous in there, they will surely open it. but if it is just what you said, they probably won't open it. did you ask them to put a fragile sticker on it?? or did you forget?
