This is an intelligent question. The reason you do not understand how we can have a relationship is because you do not understand that Jesus lives. He rose from the dead. How do you have a relationship with someone you cannot see with your eyes or hear with your ears? I don't know. But I do know that I do have a relationship with Him. I know Him and He knows me. He hears me, loves me, cares for me, protects me, guides me and one day I will be with Him forever.
I know it's frustrating to hear people say things like this. The bible says the things of God are spiritually discerned. I don't mean to talk down to you...but only those who are born again can fully understand the things I am saying. You can have a relationship with Jesus, too, if you choose to.

First you say "if he really existed". Jewish and Roman historical records record a baby being born thru death of a man named Jesus of Nazareth.
Second Jesus rose from the dead to live by the right hand of God the father for eternity.
Since Jesus rose from the grave their are no remains, like any normal person, because He is no normal person He is God.

Jesus Christ was different, and the reason is because He not only claimed to be God, but His whole life was a witness to its truth. Because of that, He alone could truthfully say, "I and the Father are one" (John 10:30).
What evidence is there for Jesus' divinity? The first is that of His sinless life—something only God could do. The Bible says Jesus was "tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin" (Hebrews 4:15). Then there is the evidence of His miracles—miracles that demonstrated the power of God.
But the final proof of Jesus' divine nature was His resurrection from the dead. Anyone could claim to be the Son of God, but only Christ proved it by coming back from the grave—an event witnessed by hundreds. Who was Jesus Christ? He was God in human flesh—and He came into this world for one reason: to save us from our sins. Why not open your heart to Him today?

Unless you want a relationship with Jesus, and ask him into your heart because you have faith, you will never possibly understand what a relationship with him is.
Here's a scripture for you, please read it carefully.
The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.
You have to have the spirit of God to understand things in the Bible, or else they are just foolishness to you. Once you receive the spirit of God, your spiritual eyes are opened and suddenly you understand things that you couldn't before.

No relation at all......
But you surely know that we christians don't believe He's dead anymore.
He died and He rose again from the dead and He will never ever die.
If anyone could really, beyond all doubt, prove to me that Jesus didn't rise from the dead I would become an atheist or agnostic or whatever.
Until then I remain catholic.
take care.

Being a student of philosophy, it leads me to believe that you would know that Jesus Christ rose from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion. Thus, his remains are nowhere because he never died.
History backs that idea up, not just out of the Gospels.

I try to have a personal relationship with Benjamin Franklyn.
but for some reason he is busy in someone else hands.
but regarding Jesus you maybe forgot that almost everybody needs to believe in a higher power.
sometimes it makes sense and sometimes don't.
you just do whatever works for you

you should also study history. then you would know of the roman records that prove Jesus did live. then you would not appear stupid with that part "if he really existed" in your question. to answer you . the same kind of relationship you have with the dead philosophers. you have studyd them. some people studie the teaching's of Christ.
