Because obviously one of your older children had a child of their own. The same thing has happened in my family. I was first an aunt when I was only 20 months old!!!! Now I'm almost 16 and I have 15 neices and nephews and 2 more on the way. It's not that rare of a thing. I just happened to be the youngest of 7 children. Your 9 yr. old daughter must just be a lot younger than her older sibling(s).

It is not that uncommon when there is a big age difference between siblings. My dad has a nephew that is older than he is because his oldest sister is 20 some years older than he is. I am 26 and have a step-sister that is only 4, so my kids have an aunt that is younger than they are. It isn't that uncommon.
If you want to get into confusing family trees, explain how my uncle is also my second cousin (no incest involved). Or how my step sister is also my first cousin once removed.

her brother or sister (or half brother or sister) had a baby. my old neighbor was an aunt at 3 because here dad had 2 daughters from a previous marrige and she is only 2 years older than her neice .
