Is there anything at present , even if it is unrelated to your work, that particularly interests you? If there is and if you think it is likely to interest others, concentrate on that interest and see if you can develop it into a serious hobby and perhaps eventaully into a career. But you have to ensure that it is not something about yourself which causes you to be bored, in which case you have to deal with that first. You speak of something you really want to do: do you mean something specific? If so, find out as much about it as you can, and see where that takes you. I would not, however, give up a job, if you are in one presently, until you can see the way ahead clearly. The people who pursue what they really wish to do have gone through difficulties of various sorts before being able to translate their dreams into reality. Writers and artists, for instance, have lived in obscurity and poverty before gaining public attention. The same goes for explorers and inventors. But if your true interests go deep and an impartial assessment tells you that they are indeed worth pursuing, you will have a good start.

As they said in "Office Space," a person should do what they WOULD do if they had millions of dollars and didn't HAVE to work. Find out what that thing would most likely be, and do it as a hobby. Really study it and become a master of it. A door will open. When that does, you'll have to go out on a limb and quit your day job. That is hard to do for the controlled people out there, but if you are doing something you love, it is well worth the risk.

What do you really want to do and what is your potential? When you have those answers you'll know what to do. Try some volunteer work. There are many places that need volunteers and you not only give but receive satisfaction too. Everyone should try some in any area that interests them. Look on line or in your local phone book for agencies and call them.

I just went through the same thing. People call it mid life crisis. I call it waking up and starting to enjoy life at 43!! I took some much needed time and focused on me!! I realized I had interests I never pursued. I started hiking, collecting rocks, doing research about the native Americans, and I am now thinking about taking a course in Paleontology! The trick is to focus on YOU.

Try reading Julia Cameron's 'The Artists Way' - it's aimed at people who want to be more creative in life, but the exercises are helpful for anyone who wants to find some direction.

Also, I think it is important to do what you want to do, not to feel pressured to do only what you are good at. So it's fine so use your potential, but don't feel obliged to if it's not what will make you happy. Do what feels right for you, and you alone.

I know what you mean, because I have a problem with always having other people do things for me and I've never built up that "I need to do this myself" attitude.
The only way and the best way is to force yourself to think that you will get a reward out of doing whatever you need to do. And really once you've done your own "application to university" or "your own taxes" you will feel really good knowing you've done it yourself.

1st of all, you'll have to self diagnose and find out your talents / potential / and what your good at.

when you have these all written down, go through the list and find out what job or volunteer work falls close to your attributes, then go out and find that job or volunteer job.

you have the ability to do what ever makes you happy, and the rewards are that in helping others you lift yourself up too.

Start by doing something different. If you like it, do it again, and add something else to your life. Basically explore different possibilities.
