I understand that the prevalence of group sex is unknown, but it does seem to be sparse at most, but is there any information on dating that involves two or more partners of the opposite sex. Not two relationships with the same one person, but a relationship where all three are involved together on a regular basis? Perhaps this has been the case in some cultures, and if not, what are the reasons?

I'm asking in order to find out about the physical health consequences of such relationships. Often monogamy is presented as the safest, yet I remember a study that showed that, in a certain school, a large portion of students, while still having multiple partners, had none outside of that circle.

yes - explore polyamoury. It's quite common to see triads or quads all living together, raising kids etc. Some even incorporate themselves in order to handle the legal issues with children, health care etc.

There are countless relationships that thrive on the enjoyment of a shared sexual excitement. It is not something that is prevalent in any one culture in particular. The more technically advanced the couture the more open society in general is to the idea of shared sex. There are many individual factors involved such as moral upbringing, social conditioning, and knowledge that effect the persons criteria as to this, up to now shunned practice by society in general. My wife and I have been married for the last 20 years and have sustained long term shared sexual relationships with no negative repercussions in our personal lives as a couple. More than anything these experiences have enhanced our understanding and enjoyment of sex and our love for one another. This type of conduct is not for everyone! You must have the love, maturity, patience, stamina and open mindedness before you can venture into this realm.

i've had an experience similar to this; the key to carrying a relationship w/ more than 2 ppl is to have everyone agree that this is what they want to do. since jealousy is the main factor why more than 2 ppl don't work out, having ev. out in the open helps cause that way no one feels the need to go behind anyone's back

Almost always in a group sex situation one person becomes jealous or wants to be exclusive. When at college I had a foursome. . . me and three girls. . . . they eventually became jealous of each other. It was good for me as during our gangbangs they all worked so hard to outdo each other! I was the beneficiary of their jealousy!

Very rare, but it can happen.

I would say don't try it unless everybody is really comfortable with the situation.
