In the dream, I'm either back in high school, 31 years old, and many of my friends from high school are there; I forgot to take one class, and I have gone back to finish it. In another variation, I have received a letter informing me that I am supposed to go back and finish high school, and I am debating whether or not to do it. Has anyone had this dream? Has anyone ever done something in their life and subsequently never had the dream again?

Okay, in answer to some of your awesome responses: I have the dream nearly every night.
I didn't cheat, and I graduated in the top 10 in my class.
I graduated from college as well as graduate school. I recently got a master's degree! And yet, when I sleep, I am back in high school to finish my degree.
I also have a dream frequently that I'm back in college (not as an adult, but college-aged) and I have an English final the next day that I totally forgot to study for. I even forgot the class existed all semester.... Anybody have that one?

Oh my goodness, I also have a similar and recurring dream like that one. I am now 53, and graduated from college 32 years ago. My dream involves the last weeks of my senior year, when I realize I signed up for a class and never attended it or dropped it. I am sure that it will prevent me from graduating.
Oddly enough, I graduated with honors with almost 20 semester hours more than I needed, as I took some classes for fun that did not apply to my degree. I don't have it every night but have had it maybe a dozen times, and is the only recurring dream that I ever remember having.

I just had this dream a few night ago, but it was going back to college instead (and I graduated several years ago). I was not happy to be back in my old dorm, and the dorm room I was assigned has a little tiny door that I could barely get through.
I think it has to do with feeling like we have to return to the past for some reason, usually an unpleasant one. In my case, I have been thinking about changing careers and I know I might have to go back to school to prepare for a new career. I consider college to be far in the past, and something I never thought I would revisit. The door to my dorm room is small because it will be difficult for me to attend classes while balancing a family life.
Have you been thinking of a career change or maybe taking a few classes? Or is there any area of your life you have been thinking about that should have been taken care of years ago?
It also might mean you feel unprepared for some current or upcoming event in your life. Is there a project at work you are worried you might not have under control? Are you going to become a dad soon, or are you considering marriage?
I have had this dream once or twice in the past about high school, and I think usually just getting through the event that I feel unprepared for helps the dream go away. But our minds have certain ways they like to communicate, and even if you can discover and fix the root of the problem that is causing this dream, it may still come back in the future when you encounter a similar situation.

I have the same recurring dream almost exactly! Only in my dream I even go into the principals office and state I dont belong there. Like last night I was in class in my dream and it dawned on me here I am back at HS WTF I thought! So I got real frustrated. The weird part of this dream is the me in class stayed put and a future me was outside of the school waiting to find a way in. A door that happened to get unlocked let me in. Everything was in reverse from the way it was originally (mirrored). So I walked into the principals office (female) I knocked on her open door and she said hey TJ whats up? I sat down and began to tell her. Look I graduated HS. **** I even graduated college!!! Why is it that Im a grown adult and for the past two years Ive been in the same grade in HS?!?!?! she began to explain that I hadnt finished a course. I interrupted her which reminded me instantly of my psych evaluators conversations recently where I blew up at them. I told her look! I dont want to go to HS for the rest of my friggin life!!!! I said Im just not going to come here anymore. Im dropping out so to say. She said you cant. I said watch me!
This dream puzzles the crap put of me all the time. I passed with a b average both HS and college both with awards in art and everything was fine. So I thought. I even have dreams that I signed up for new classes to fill the rest of my time while Im there for the one I need the credit for and I skip them and worry I wont finish graduating because of it. If you ever figure out why your having the dream shoot me an email lol.

Dreaming of going back to school could mean two things.
1. You didn't finish or fulfill things you have done in school years. and you want to go back and relive the moment and try to make it happen again in dream.
2. There is some discontentment in reality. Going back to the school years could be regret for you cannot accomplish now. You want to do it over.
3. You may have missed the school years. There are fun and some resolved issues in school years. Going back is one of the ways to escape

i think it means something related to a "backward" thing.
you're 31 now, and the reverse (forgive my english, i beg you), 13 years ago, you "lie", you "cheat" to yourself.
but now, you cannot hide it anymore, because it is a public thing (the letter informing the situation).
there's something (a class) you believe everyone else had passed it (your friends are there, they've passed it) but, you haven't.
i something you think it wouldn't be noticed, but now, that's no longer the real thing.
it's obvious, now, that you MUST finish it.
tell me what it is, if you find out!!! :)

Maybe you didn't deserve to graduate and your subconcious mind is trying to tell you something. Think of things like: have you ever cheated on your exam? If you did, would you have failed and not passed the grade?

My guess is that subconsciously there's something you haven't done regarding school. Have you been thinking about going back for an advanced degree? Maybe some small regret is nagging you....

you are not fulfilling one of your most basic, yet overlooked needs. What it is...I don't know.
But you are not accomplishing something that needs to be done.
It doesn't necessarily have to do with school. Or graduation.
Dreams are rarely literal.
