To answer your question directly, no, the Lutheran Church is one of the major denominations of Christianity. However, you cannot designate all of Lutherndom as a single church, the differences among the synods are too extreme to group them. In fact, if your Uncle attends an ELCA Lutheran church, that church is no longer recognized by the rest of Lutherandom as a Lutheran church. Every 20 years all the Synods gather together for a Council and discussion upon church doctrine. At the last gathering it was regrettably decided that the ELCA was to be refused acknowledgement as a Lutheran Church since they have strayed so far from the teachings of Martin Luther. For further information I recomend going to the Wisconsin Lutheran Churchs website and reading through there database that contains thousands of questions. The web address is: http://www.wels.net
Gods Blessings to you!

Technically, all denominations are sects, as it is defined as being a group of people who adhere to a particular set of beliefs and practices. However, in our common use of the word, where sect has come to mean something worse, the Lutheran Church does not fit that definition.
The Lutheran Church is a Protestant denomination. There are several branches of the Lutheran Church, including Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and Missouri Synod. Every individual group of believers is a little different, and may seem somewhat "cultish" to someone else.
The best thing you can do is meet with the pastor of this church and find out exactly what they believe, assuming that you're really interested.

Some of that religion so cunduct their worrship in a way that is some what "different" But I think that, at least most are honest in trying to pass The Truth of The Salvation message. They do have some thing a bit off though and I do not recomend to non-believers that they take the teaching of the Lutherans as The best way to go.
Here is a link to a page on my website about a Luteran sect. It is a direct link so you do not have to wade through my site to find it

I would have to look and see what the difference is between a sect and denomination is, but from what I understand the Lutheran side of the house is a respectable denomination in the Christian society.

What makes it seem strange? Many people get quite involved in church activities. Lutheranism is a demonination, not a sect.

Every Christian church is a sect according to the following definition found in dictionary.com:
"A group of people forming a distinct unit within a larger group by virtue of certain refinements or distinctions of belief or practice."
I hope this helps.
