Well, I don't get a double burger or large fries, but I get Diet Coke because I prefer the taste. And, really, a 12 oz. diet coke, instead of regular coke eliminates like 240 calories.

Some people just have gotten used to the taste of diet coke. I'm one of those people--I hate the super-sugary taste of a lot of soft drinks.
I wouldn't go so far as to get the super size, but I do sometimes get a burger, fries and diet soda.

That's known as brain derailment or self delusion. Anyone knows that drinking diet coke helps you lose weight. Of course, to balance what they're taking in they would have to drink several gallons of it ....
But it is laughably common, isn't it?
Just a thought -- do you suppose they like the taste of it? Nahh. Couldn't be that.
