I mean, are these birds rare (Zebra Finches, cockatels, etc.), or are they common.

Do they like to be in cages?

And can you let them fly outside the cage?

The birds you've mentioned aren't rare and are easily bred in captivity. That implies that they are probably happy in captivity!

Zebra finches do not usually bond well with humans. They are best kept in an aviary.

Cockatiels can bond with people and are ok to keep alone in cages - so long as you give the bird lots of attention! If you can't do that, two cockatiels in a sufficiently large cage should be fairly happy. The larger the cage the better.

Don't let finches fly around the house and don't cut their wings. This is too traumatic for them.

You may let a TAME cockatiel fly around the house, but make sure that they are protected from any sources of danger - hotplates, windows/mirrors, gaps between furniture, etc. You can also clip the wings of a tame cockatiel, but so long as you are careful, this should be unnecessary. The bird will eventually fly to you or its cage - if it has been tamed. Never let a bird fly outside. It will probably become disoriented and fly away.

Enjoy!

Finches, parakeets and cockatiels are not rare. Finches and parakeets sell (in ohio) for $10-20.00 (newspaper want ads to petstore prices). Cockatiels sell for $25.00-$120.00 (newspaper want ads to petstore prices). This matters on coloring - some colors are more rare than others and on wether they have been handfed- handfed birds are better because they are tamer and more people friendly. If you have a small home and small budget then a budgie (also known as a parakeet) is the right pet for you - the males can learn simple words (some females speak too but that is not as common) and are a joy to watch play in their cages. If you want a bird that tends to talk a great deal get a cockatiel- males are the more likelier to talk than females but as a breed they tend to pick up talking much easier and are better at it but remember they also tend to be much noiser than the parakeets. Also cockatiels need bigger more costlier cages than the parakeets. I have never owned finches- but the nursing home that I work at did for a long time- while cute to look (they do not talk) they frankly got slightly on my nerves (I'm not going to say I'll never own any, but I'll never own more than a pair at a time, and I'll probably only take in any as rescues) they are very skittish and fluttery and tend to flit around the cages (at least the ones at work did and they had 10 birds with 10 cages in rooms throughout the building) at rather high rates of speed making quite a mess where they sat. Ok hope this helps ya a little bit :) Good luck choosing your next pet!

they're common. You can let cockatiels fly outside of the cage, but only if it's tamed or else you won't be able to put it back in the cage. I don't know about Zebra Finches. As long as the cage is big enough and they have all they need they can be content in a cage.

Zebra finches and cockatiels are very common. If you let them fly around the house they may get injured. Please get their wings cut, if you want them out of their cage. They don't get
Along well at all. I don't know if they like to be in cages or not.
I wouldn't . I've bread many birds over the years, and I always
wonder if this is right. We should of never taken them from their natural habitat. I love them all dearly, but I wish they could just fly
free outside.

Cockatels are very common & so are finches.
ANY ANIMAL DOES NOT LIKE TO BE CAGED---HOWEVER
For their own protection this is nessacerry ; and it is NOT a good idea to let them fly out side their cage UNLESS you have trained them.

No they are not rare and could be found in any pet shops. One thing I can tell you for sure is that they DON'T like to be in cages. I have 2 parakeets/budgies and the first thing they do every morning is to chirp so loudly until I come by and let them fly around. They will go back to their cage when they're done flying around and chirping, usually 2-3 hrs later, all by themselves. i don't close cage doors so they can come out if they want to unless no one's at home.

THEY ARE COMMON AND IF YOU HAD THE TIME YOU OULD MAYBE LET THE BIRDS OUT FOR A LITTLE WHILE DURING THE DAY IF NOTHING IS AOUND THAT WILL HURT THEM I ONCE HAD A PARAKEET AND I WOULD LET IT OUT AND WHEN IT WAS READY TO GO BACK IN HIS CAGE HE FLEW ON TOP OF THE CAGE AND SOME HOW LEARNED TO SHUT THE DOOR.

Keeping birds in the cage is so sad...but you really have to put them in the cage in their own safe.

our birds have huge cages nad htey are perfectly happy. If you keep there wings clipped you can let them loose in the house while supervised if no other animals are around

I don't like seeing birds in cages. It makes me sad. I'd imagine it would be like you or I living in a jail cell.
