Due to the size of the program, you would not want to download it, unless you don't need it until next semester for school (LOL).

You will want to purchase it on disk. You can get it seperately or as part of Microsoft Office. While Office cost more, you get Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook with it far cheaper than you could buy them individually. So it is the smarter buy.

Check with your college bookstore because Microsoft (as part of their anti-trust suite settlement) offers greatly reduced prices on Office for college students (in the USA). Half off or more. So check with the school bookstore before buying elsewhere

In the meantime, you have a stripped down version of Word that comes free with all versions of Windows. It is called Wordpad. There should be an icon at Start > All Programs > Accessories > Wordpad. It will let you type nicely formatted paper with fonts, etc. just like Word. But it lacks the spell checker and other advanced features. Still a whole lot better then trying to type term papers in (ugh!!) Notepad.

Hope that helps

I suggest you look at open office. There you find a lot of office programs very similar to the windows versions.
