Our ridgeback/doberman has kennel cough and has been on meds for almost 2 weeks. He still has coughs and snot --mostly in the AM. How long is this suppose to last?
Also after starting different meds last weekend he started having 1 minute episodes of sucking in air - after he sneezes...reverse sneeze. i am wondering if its related to the meds or the cough?

My guess would be neither. Alot of dogs have reverse sneezing. Rub his throat and make him stay calm unill he stops. That should help. As far as the Kennel Caugh goes, he should be on antibiotics for 7 days....one pill twice a day. He should have been better a week ago if it has been 2 weeks already. You might want to call your vet and run this by him.....let him know your dog is not getting better. Good luck!

Usually kennel cough will run it's course in about 14 days and with meds this time should be shorter.

I had experience with a dog that was diagnosed with reverse sneeze, but it was a very old dog. After seeing the vet and meds, he improved but other health problems pursued and we lost him to cancer. Not saying that your dog fits this profile!

You may want a follow-up visit with your vet and explain the symptons and ask why the kennel cough seems to persist. The vet may want to do some tests or even xrays to determine the cause of his reverse sneeze.

Kennel cough can last 2 weeks or more depending on the treatment. The reverse sneezing could be a side effect of the meds. To prevent your dog from getting kennel cough again check into get him a bordatella (kennel cough vaccine.) shot. Good luck.

My daughter had quite a time with a Min pin she bought from the Mall...she had a bad case of kennel cough . took quite a few Vet visits.... but eventually the dog came around and is doing fine now.... took about 6 months..... and she was able to make the store pay for all the vet bills
Good Luck

When my husky gets kennel cough, it usually lasts less than 3 days. Actually, I never heard of meds being prescribed for kennel cough?
If he is otherwise healthy, I would make sure he has fresh water DAILY, and let him sleep out in the backyard in the sun. Of course, make sure his food is nutritious.

I have 2 dogs with that...One, my poodle, it turned into heart disease, and she's on med's for life now... the other, my Chihuahua, I just have to hold him when he goes through the coughing spells... It's awful, breaks my heart... just take him back in because he shouldn't have anything coming out of his nose... oh, also with my female. she has nose drops to help control the cough from allergies, believe it or not... they are just like us....

You really should be discussing these symptoms with your vet. Different medications can cause different reactions.
