I would beep the horn and try to miss him, and avoid a collision with another car. If it is between hitting a cat and hitting another car, unfortunately the cat does not have good odds in that scenario. If it is a person I would (of course) avoid hitting him or her at all costs, even if i had to drive off the road and crash. I think that is a given though.

Squash them God will make more. Heartless yes but endanger my passengers and swerve into oncoming traffic avoid the front wheels only to have the cat run under my back tire. Bigger animals are a different story 70 lb dog really smashes into a car hard at 40mph

I hate to say this..but I learned my lesson years ago. I swerved to avoid hitting a kitten..almost killed myself and the passenger! I love cats, dogs, all animals but it is not worth a human life. DO NOT SWERVE. Just hope the cat will make it across the road.

Look in your rear view mirror, as long as you have room to do so....slowly apply brakes.
you might just have to forget about it, if you hit the cat, well, that sucks.
But if you swerve or hit another car...you take the dings, both in the accident and monetarily.
