First of all have you ever owned a bird before? Do you have any knowledge about the care of an African Gray?
I have placed African Grays at no charge in new family homes, but people who I have place the birds with have had to prove to me that they know what they are getting into in owning an African Gray. We have place over 100 birds for free in new homes.
Before you take in any bird make sure you are able to meet the needs of the bird.
You can always place an ad in the local Newspaper that you are looking for one, but there is no guarentee that you will get one unless you but it. In the past 10 years we have only had 5 African Grays given to our rescue center.

I swear I WON'T laugh at you! lol I have 4 parrots and they are a ton of work, worry and expense; not to even mention the mess. Really do your homework before purchasing a parrot. Also, you usually get what you pay for. Many birds that have not been care for and nurtured properly develope behavior problems such as feather picked, screaming, biting.

OK, someone needs to let you know something. Your question is not a stupid one! You are not a dork! You just don't understand the bird world and there is something else you don't understand. Something you get for free is not taken care of as well as something you pay for (generally). It's not because you're a bad person, it's just a psychological, human thing. Breeders put a lot of care, time and money into getting their birds to breed and at least some of that needs to be recovered. Most of us love our birds and want the little ones taken care of properly.

I have a Timneh Grey, paid 425. for her as a baby. That's pretty cheap. If you did, by some freaky chance, find one for free, not sure I'd want it, God only knows what kind of bad habits it's picked up..................
