She is 1 1/2 years old, spayed, and is treated like a queen around our house! But she has developed this nasty temperament when friends come around.

You have answered your own question. Treat someone like a queen, and they develop a nasty temperament.

You need to become the leader of the pack, toots. She will really appreciate that and be happier with that than being spoiled, even though you may find it hard to believe. Example: when you go to the door and she's with you, don't allow her to get in front of you and make sure she's totally calm before opening the door. A quick pssst noise will get her attention as well as a sharp touch. That's at least a start. Go to "dog whisperer.com" (I think that's the name of the site).

Like a lot of small dogs, shih-tzus are one owner animals and are pretty protective. Don't let your friends get into your dog's "space" and she may warm a little to them, but warn them that she does bite and the growling is a warning - just like a rattler - and they should not assume she won't nip them.

Stop treating her like a queen and treat her like the family dog instead. She needs a full medical exam and blood work and socailizition and training.
