Dogs and cats can get along quite well, once they're used to each other. The problem occurrs when they meet too quickly. Here's why:

Dogs are pack animals, and their position in the pack is established by dominance and submission. They're higher in the pack hierarchy than those in the pack who are submissive to them, and they're lower in the pack hierarchy than any dog they themselves show submission to. The way dogs determine this is by sniffing butts. It may sound silly, but the way humans make choices is sometimes a bit odd too.

On the other hand, cats are solitary hunters. They don't run in packs. So when they meet a new "acquaintence", they show respect by keeping their claws in and politely touch noses. This keeps them in a position where they can defend themselves if necessary.

Usually, when strange cats and dogs meet, the cat doesn't even have a chance to offer to touch noses before the dog runs up all excited and tries to sniff the cats' butt. And the fight is on right there!!

If a dog holds up his paw, it means "let's play". If a cat holds up his paw, it means "I'm going to fight". A dog holds it's tail down when it's afraid, but a cat holds it's tail down when hunting. A cat purrs when it's relaxed, but it sounds like a growl to a dog. A dog marks marks his territory to say welcome to other dogs, but cats are loners and mark their territory to keep others out.
They don't get along because their 'language' is almost exactly opposite of each other.

That's not necessarily true. I have a seven-year-old Akita and a maine Coon kitten. They get along perfectly fine. Matter of fact, the dog thinks it's the cat's "mommy".
