Do you have any family you could leave him with? Any friends or neighbors he knows that could watch him? Or you could call a petsitter and see if they can come visit him a couple times a week or month to get him used to them before christmas. If none of those options work...you have a couple others which are going to be a pain...1. Don't go on your trip 2. Take him to a kennel and make sure to leave a few things that smell like home with him. 3. Check the requirements for bringing him with you...I don't know if he would fit the airline requirements and I don't know what the quarantine restrictions are for the US but you should be able to get that from the airline.

Its possible to help dogs who have phobias. Swampy's quality of life must be poor if he's scared of everyday things.
Please get some advice, it is now possible to use a combination sedative therapy with nervous dogs while you re-train them. Two very low doses of different sedatives seem to boost their confidence without making them sleepy. Ask your vet if they have a behavioural trainer attatched to the practice, and here's the address for The Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors.
I've kept and worked with nervous dogs, and I have to warn you that they are a liability. They will fear bite if approached by a persistant stranger who insists on trying to stroke or comfort them.
You must think about what would happen to your dog if anything happened to you, for example if you were taken to hospital. You must find someone local who is used to handling these dogs who is prepared to meet on a regular basis and act as your back up; maybe you do the same for them in return.

don't know where you live or i would offer to help you! i once typed in dogsitting etc into seach engine..and found a site (sori can't remember name) where you can register your details and they can help..so search around.. also why not put ads in local paper/shops etc.. i got a dogsitter that way (as i work away alot)..if you do this now and find someone ..they could get to know swampy and vice versa..
Kennels are bad for dogs..i know they generally look after them.. but I think putting the dogs there changes the dog..and it wouldn't be happy there!good luck .. from one dog lover to another x

Why not try a pet sitting service.
If you haven't got anyone local you could try "Animal Angels." Check out their website:
http://www.professionalpetsitting.co.uk/
I think now is a good time to think about booking up as Christmas will probably a busy time. If they can find you a fairly local person they may be able to get to know your dog before you go away.
Hope everything works out for you!

you have time to find a sitter and get swampy well used to them before you go, keep searching, plenty of good advice here. my dad used to breed them 28 yrs ago we always had them around i grew up with the breed so to speak. they are a fabulous breed and simply adore ppl i used to tease them ( not cruel as such, tied a couple of balloons around neck etc) was never ever bit or shown aggression, the best family dog breed ever. this was before ppl really knew the breed. wouldnt have one now though too stressful with other dogs/cats. they just love to fight!

Hiya
try the national home boarding register, www.nhbr.co.uk (or maybe .com) this way you can find someone in your area who will look after your dog in their house, as if it was their own pet, i do this and have lots of dogs who stay who are too frightened to go to kennels, but also lots of dogs who are just really happy to be living in my house with me and my dogs, i had a collie staying for the last 2 weeks who was really frightened of everything, but after a couple of days she relaxed and had a really nice time.
hope this helps,

Look in your local papers or contact your vet as there are people who will look after the dog in your own home, for a fee of course
