I think it's a primitive instinct to insult those who are different. Like a self defense mechanism. It makes me sick. I'm in high school and I am constantly called "retarded" and "screwed up" because I'm different.

Because some people have closed minds to other peoples rights and choices. Not everyone is this way thankfully. Unfortunately there are a lot of religions that are getting bad names because of a few bad seeds. But then again there are some bad religions/beliefs that seem to just hate everyone and will do what they can to destroy everyone else. I am sorry for that small town that saw such hate. I hope Ma'at will prevail and swiftly.

Not everyone follows the Lord's commandments of loving thy neighbor. Also, America I feel doesn't do a good enough job of educating its people on diverse cultures, therefore, the less we know about a kind of people, the less likely we are to like, and surely not LOVE them.
People dislike things they don't understand, (and since America's not as smart as some of our European counterparts, this is happening more often than expected), and are afraid of things they can't control. So to maintain control and ignorance, these kinds of crimes are committed.
I feel the incident your mom spoke of is a sign of the end. Places where things don't usually happen, things are now happening, and will continue to happen as long as the end is coming. PLease don't take me for a fanatic or a wacko, I'm just stating how I feel/believe.
I hope this helps!

Everything humans do revolves around fear. Our bodies can be
easily damaged, which makes us protective. We fear others
will get our jobs. Our partners. Even our behavour is defensive.
All the crazy acting today, is people just trying to frighten others away, so they won't get hurt.
People fear difference, because it makes them feel there is
something wrong with themselves. Thus all the self-righteous
finger pointing, and making a big deal out of everybody elses
faults.
It is all designed to take the attention off themselves. And it
is evil. A twisted mind game. Because constantly talking
about others only draws the attention to ourselves.

Let me start by saying that I don't believe in the "hate crime" concept. That is thought policing. I don't think anyone is thinking about love when they commit these kinds of crimes, so the term is redundant. As far as the initial question, fear is the answer. People in general fear that which they don't know or understand, and it is easier to destroy than to learn.

The other day in San Antonio, someone went to a refuge for cats and strangled 12 animals. There are people among us with hatred in them; they have no conscious or empathy for anyone or anything. Indeed, we should love our neighbors and many of us do. It is unfortunate that there are so many people around who do not feel this way.

Sorry to hear. It's truly sad. Hate and Love are what we are taught as children. Those that are taught to hate sometimes come to see thing differently. A lot of the rest are numbers in the prison populations.

That is a good question and I'm sorry, I don't know how to answer it. It makes me really sad when I hear about such crimes taking place.

Unfortunately, it is simply easier for most to hate than be willing to accept differences. Acceptance oftens means taking time to learn and think for yourself and some people are unwilling and unable to do so.

people are afraid of things that are different from them or that threatens their way of life..they want everything to be in a way that makes them comfortable, and don't want their children exposed to anything that they don't like or except.
religion is touchy b/c most people think that their religion is the only right one, so to them if their children were exposed to a different one and followed it, the parent would feel that they were lost to hell or whatever place forever.
does that make sense
