My family believes in multi-generation habitation. Until my father died last year, we were 4 generations in this house. Now there's just me (Nana), my 2 daughters (and one long term boyfriend) and their 3 sons. It allows a better cost of living for all of us to pool our resources. The boys get the benefit of my wisdom (I say in all modesty), and my daughters don't have to worry about child care when they work. My youngest daughter had ulcers before she moved back in with us. And other health problems were manifesting every month. She ended up having heart surgery, kidney surgery, and gall bladder surgery all within 3 months of moving back home. And now she's healthy and working with no more ulcers.

I always told my mom that her generation was responsible for the breakdown of the family unit, because they were the ones that insisted on having separate homes away from their parents and other family members. Before that time, multi-generational homes were the norm. My family is trying to resurrect the practise to put more sanity into this world.

In India, parents live with adult children sometimes, or most often. My mother in law does. It's great.
