How long is a piece of string? The word mile comes from the latin word for thousand, one Roman mile was 1 thousand paces. If your pace was 1 yard long ( long pace!) it would take 1760 of them for a modern mile.

In marching band, the typical step covered 5 yards (15 feet) in 8 steps. Each step was 15/8 feet, or 1.875 feet.
Just divide the number of feet in a mile (5280) by the average step size and you will have the number of steps.
5280/1.875~2816 steps
Since people will have different step sizes, there are between 2700 and 3000 steps in a mile.

A step or pace is usually taken to be a yard, 5280ft/mile / 3 = 1760yd/mile, so 1760 steps. If you want a more personalised count, measure your stride and adjust accordingly.

What you need to do is figure out what your average stride length is. This will tell you how: http://www.bellaonline.com/ArticlesP/art39548.asp
Once you determine what your stride length is, divide 5,280 (ft/mi) by that number. Viola! You now have your answer.
A pedometer will also do the same thing, but you'll have to walk a mile to find that out.
