I am a coach and the person doing this is a parent of one of my players. She is saying to people around town that if I don't play her daughter she is going to go to the administation about things her daughter says I said to her. She is involving other players, and even my own nephew, who dates her daughter. What she is saying is blown way out of proportion, and I think it's stemming from the fact her daughter was disciplined recently by me. I know I should ignore it, but I'm afraid it will distroy the dynamics of my team, not to mention my reputation.

First: DO NOTHING. The last thing you want to do is add fuel to the fire. By combating the things she is saying you only raise in other peoples minds is that there may be something to what she is saying.
The only thing you CAN do at this point is to let your reputation stand on it's own merits. If you are a good coach, things will turn out alright. But there is nothing you can do to stop the woman from spreading things about.
Me personally, I have to wonder when someone is telling me something slanderous about another. What kind of character is she displaying about herself? Seems to me the people who count the most are also the ones LEAST likely to listen to what she is saying.
Soon it will all blow over. As long as your discipline of her daughter was appropriate and reasonable then the team should be able to see it clearly. If they don't then (my opinion is) they were NEVER a team in the first place. HOWEVER, this may actually turn out to solidify the team.

Go right to the school board and tell them of the problem and her threats, NOW, don't wait, then figure out is she really worth playing, better than the rest, or just an also ran, stick by your guns, there can be only one boss, and your it! If she really threatened blackmail, make a police report, that way you will be on file for everything, and I would talk to the girl but with the team captain and co captains and explain what a problem her mother is making and if it doesn't stop, in order not to distrupt the team you will have to take her off the roster! She has a better chance of making her mother stop than you, especially if she wants to be part of the team.

Speak to the administration straightaway and tell them what you said to the daughter so that the woman cannot make things up that you have to defend later.
If you want to confront her directly, HAVE A THIRD PERSON THERE. Otherwise you will find her claiming that you threatened her later.
If you are in a small town, the best cure for reputation damage is to coach a winning team. If you are not in a small town, then the rumors will die off anyway when people find something new to gossip about.

Confrontation is the best solution. Talk to the Board, telling them of the rumors you have heard and why you think they have been circulating. Ask that this parent be brought in so you can confront her in front of witnesses. Let her explain her actions to them so if there is a scandal later on you will at least have the boards backing.

YEs, best to ignore a person like this even though it is so very h ard to do.
Remember thhis one thing. people who spread rumors, gossip and lie about others usually end up getting a smack in thier sit down . sooner or later this person will have all this thrown back in her face. team mates know the truth and see what this persons parent is doing. dont kid yourself. if you have been honest amd forthright with your players they will know what the real truth is and perhaps this parents child will be the one who suffers in the end for what the parent is doing. people who really know you will be there for you.

Cut her off at the source. first talk to someone in administration about it . tell them what she is doing what happened and how you feel about it that way if she does it they will know she is starting trouble.
That way you can also say...... when she threatens you personally. " well i have already talked to them about this and you so go a head"
after confront the monther and tell her you dont a prrove of this behavor from the kids or her.

Do nothing. Ignore her. If you have done nothing wrong, there's nothing more for you to do. The truth always come out in the end.
