i have to write a topic for an english essay. Any topic i want but i don't know what to write about. any ideas?

I'm not sure how old you are, which makes a difference in terms of a good topic.
An interesting one is to write about the pros and cons of Antarctic exploration.
Or consider writing about the effects of global warming on the Arctic.
How about practical energy sources for the future?
Earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, and other natural events.
Is there other life out there in the universe?
Mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle and the Sargasso Sea?
Alexander the Great?
Did Shakespeare really write all the works he gets credit for?
Medieval times?

Perhaps a discursive essay about a topic you know a lot about, or perhaps something explaining a hobby of yours or something you know a lot about (writing for information). If stories are an option, then you could try personal writing: writing about something you did. Avoid writing any other stories as these are usually quite difficult to get good marks or grades in as, unless you have a knack for story writing, they are quite difficult.

Write about the great loners -- Byronic heroes in the Romantic period of literature (late eighteenth, early nineteenth centuries). The template is Byron's long poem "Childe Harold's pilgrimage." Other great examples -- Heathcliff in Bronte's "Wuthering Heights"; Pechorin in Lermontov's "A Hero for Our Time"; Pushkin's "Onegin" (bonus: they made a recent movie about this one).
There's nothing like reading up on brooding, handsome, doomed and disaffected romantic anti-heroes on a grey afternoon and writing up something about it that evening and the next morning. These were the first real comments on how things were going with the modern crisis of western masculinity.

Write about what it is like growing up in a country full of war and terrorism. Juxtapose the war with something benign like a trip to the shops to buy apples.
Trust me, that's an A grade essay

you could be really clever and write about trying to write an essay but finding it tough or whatever - as a general guide, it's easiest to write about stuff you have personal experience of.

Write about something you know something about. I'm sure they've given you their requirements and guidelines. It will be easier, and more interesting to read, if it's something you know about or did - like skating, or your trip to Wyoming, or your knee surgery. This way you can throw in some extra stuff about your own personal experience.
